The committee met on the 19th October at the CWU Offices in Stockport. Sadly only four branches were represented, a poor showing considering we estimate that over ten branches now have Branch Youth Officers.
Campaign to save 435 jobs at Virgin Media Liverpool
The Communication Workers Union is campaigning to save 435 jobs at the Virgin Media site run by Adecco at Liverpool’s Albert Dock after the company announced its intention to leave Merseyside. Staff have not had a pay rise for over six years and were told of the decision to close the Albert Dock site after they asked for a pay rise.
Louise Ellman, MP for Liverpool Riverside who met with workers from the site, is backing the campaign to keep jobs in Liverpool and CWU is putting proposals to the company for alternative, less expensive workplaces which would safeguard skilled work for the 435 staff. Virgin Media is offering people the option of moving to Swansea or Manchester if they want to keep a job.
Branches will be aware that in line with the previously published arrangements the Senior Deputy General Secretary is required to publish a standard election timetable for the RM Area Rep/Substitute positions (The timetable applies to positions that cover more than one branch area, i.e. those RM Area Rep elections, which are currently organised by the Regional Secretary). Accordingly the timetable for the 2011 RM Area Rep elections is as follows:
Branches will probably be aware of recent publicity in the media regarding the above mentioned trial which has been agreed with the CWU. Postcomm (now Ofcom) has also given consent and its support for the trial to go ahead.
The trial which is due to commence on the 28th November 2011 and due to conclude on the 25th February 2012 will be carried out in the 6 DSM areas listed below.
